What we are doing

Let’s do something different in April.

We’ll keep to the spirit of our community by having only two requirements to join:

1.  Commit to meditating at least 5 minutes everyday

2. Check-in your practice time on our shared spreadsheet everyday

However, I’m also going to follow Sharon Salzberg’s 28-Day Program and I want to invite you to join me.  It’s not something you have to do in order to join our practice community, but it will probably frame our blog conversation this month.  She articulates her program in her book Real Happiness.  I haven’t read it yet, but it will be fun to do this together!

Click here and request access to our shared spreadsheet if you want to join us in April.  Join us whether you want to do Salzberg’s 28-Day Program or not.  There are only two requirements to join:

1.  Commit to meditating at least 5 minutes everyday

2. Check-in your practice time on our shared spreadsheet everyday

Make Meditation a Habit

It is best to meditate for 5 minutes every day than for an hour once per week, meditation becomes beneficial when it is a daily practice.  When we want to build any new habit it is important to start with a very low threshold, it is the way to bypass our subconscious resistance to change – hence the very low 5 minute threshold.  Public commitment and shared accountability are the other two keys to building a new habit – hence the check-in spreadsheet.

For the last five months a good and ever changing group of us has been experimenting with an online meditation community that supports the building of a habit.  We are doing it again!  28 Days - from April 1 to April 28.  There are only two requirements to join:

1.  Commit to meditating at least 5 minutes everyday

2. Check-in your practice time on our shared spreadsheet everyday

If you have been meditating for a while, you do not have to limit yourself to 5 minutes!  I aim to check-in a 60 minute sit every day and having this community is certainly a STRONG inspiration for my commitment.  Some participants are very happy to stay at 5 minutes every day, others gradually work themselves up from 5 to 20 minutes over the 28 days.  We cover the full range of meditation experience, you can start wherever you are and join our community in order to strengthen your practice.  There are only two requirements to join:

1.  Commit to meditating at least 5 minutes everyday

2. Check-in your practice time on our shared spreadsheet everyday

Many of us have also found it helpful to track our progress as Twitter and Facebook status updates - another way to build accountability and garner the support of your friends.  Daily, I’ll tweet something like:

“Day 3/28 of meditation practice – done! It was… today #28sits”

And we also keep this blog, where you are invited to share your experiences, meditation resources, inspiring images and things of that sort.  But again, this is all optional, our only requirements are two:
